On race days the racecourse closes New Crane Street and Watergate Street from mid-morning to late evening using retractable bollards, which severs the direct western approach into the walled centre entirely. That gets looked up as soon as a date exists, with the approach switching to Parkgate Road where required — a small planning step that has spared more than one supplier a wasted afternoon.
