VR Hire Durham

A Norman castle that still holds banquets, a country estate with 350 acres and 127 bedrooms, and a cricket ground with a 160-foot glass frontage. Durham's event rooms are unusually characterful — and its access rules unusually specific.

Local knowledge

We know Durham's venues

Durham has the distinction of running Britain's original road-user charge, on the cathedral peninsula around Saddler Street and Market Place. It currently costs a couple of pounds between mid-morning and late afternoon, with an increase and longer hours under discussion. For an event at the Castle or anywhere inside the peninsula that shapes the whole load-in plan — we arrive outside the charging window where we can, and factor it in where we can't. Either way it's on our side of the invoice.

Most larger events actually happen off the peninsula, and they're straightforward. Ramside Hall sits in 350 acres just off the A690 with rooms for two to six hundred, Seat Unique Riverside — Durham Cricket's ground — is four miles out at Chester-le-Street rather than in the city itself, and the Radisson Blu sits by the river with proper meeting space. Worth flagging one date: the Miners' Gala closes the entire centre for several days in July, and it's not a partial closure.

Travel & booking

The practical bit

Travel

Travel across Durham and the county is included, peninsula charge and all. We plan load-ins around the charging window and the city's genuinely medieval street pattern, and country-estate venues get the easy treatment they deserve.

Booking

Durham's two immovable dates are the Miners' Gala in July and graduation weeks, both of which fill the city entirely. Around them the diary is open, and December is calmer here than on Tyneside.

Durham FAQs

Good questions, straight answers

What's the peninsula road charge and does it affect us?
It's Britain's original congestion charge, covering Saddler Street and Market Place during the day, and it's ours to pay, not yours. Where possible we load in outside the charging hours; where we can't, it's absorbed into the quote rather than added to it.
Can you set up inside Durham Castle?
Yes, with the access conversation happening early. It's a UNESCO World Heritage building on a peninsula with restricted vehicle access, so we agree the drop point and carry route in advance. The room repays the effort considerably.
Is the Miners' Gala a problem?
It closes the city centre completely for several days in July, so it's a date to avoid rather than work around. Tell us your window and we'll flag it before you book a venue.
Do you cover the wider county?
All of it — Darlington, Bishop Auckland, Consett, Chester-le-Street and out to the Dales, with mileage listed plainly. County Durham's country-house venues are some of the best rooms in the North East.
Which format suits a country-estate venue like Ramside?
Clay shooting and golf, then archery for the finals. It reads as a proper country away day without anyone changing into boots, and 350 acres means nobody is short of somewhere to put a spectator crowd.
