How it plays in Edinburgh
Edinburgh in December is a scheduling problem before it's an entertainment one. The Christmas market takes over the Gardens and with it a good deal of the centre's traffic and parking, the good venues were spoken for by early autumn, and any New Town room means Georgian staircases, listed-building rules and residents' permits between the van and the party. We ask those questions — lift or stairs, door widths, nearest legal stop — weeks ahead rather than discovering the answers at five o'clock on the night.
There's also a second season here that nowhere else has. Plenty of Edinburgh firms skip the December scrum entirely and run their party in the first half of January, or build something around Hogmanay when half the city is already out. Both are genuinely easier to book, noticeably cheaper, and the team is markedly less exhausted than they are in the third week of December. If your date isn't fixed by tradition, it's the single best piece of advice we can give a capital organiser.
