Two things dominate the local calendar. The Open Championship returns to Royal Birkdale in July 2026, which saturates the town and every approach road for that week entirely — it is not a week to hold an unrelated corporate event here. And the seafront is an active construction site from spring 2026 as the Marine Lake Events Centre is built, which changes access along that stretch as the works progress.
It's worth being clear about what isn't available, because the listings lag badly: the old Southport Theatre & Convention Centre closed in 2020 and has been demolished. Its £73m replacement, the Marine Lake Events Centre, slipped past its April 2026 target with main works only starting in spring. Neither is bookable. What remains is genuinely good — the Prince of Wales' Bamber Ballroom takes 450, the Royal Clifton and Ramada Plaza cover the promenade, and Formby Hall's four purpose-built conference rooms sit in 200 acres just down the coast.

Southport business units take a full build

Booking
The Open in July 2026 is the one immovable week. Outside it Southport is open and the Lord Street ballrooms are considerably better value than their equivalents in Liverpool. Lord Street's Victorian hotels hold their December Saturdays longer than the seafront ones, which is a useful fallback if your first choice has gone.
